Former defense secretary campaigning for Heitkamp in ND

BISMARCK - Former U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is in North Dakota this week to campaign with Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.

Hagel, a former Republican U.S. senator from Nebraska, will attend "veterans for Heidi" events in Bismarck, New Town, Minot, Grand Forks, Portland, Fargo and Heitkamp's hometown of Mantador Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Wednesday. The events come two weeks before Election Day, when voters will decide whether to give Heitkamp a second term over Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer.

Hagel served in the Senate from 1997 to 2009, and he served as defense secretary under former President Barack Obama from 2013 to 2015. Hagel is the only Vietnam veteran and the first enlisted combat veteran to serve as defense secretary, according to the Department of Defense.
