West Fargo School Board not ready to decide if outside firm needed to find new leader

WEST FARGO—The West Fargo School Board will decide next month if it will hire a consulting firm to help find a new superintendent to replace David Flowers, who is retiring June 30.

"I'll always value my time in this district," Flowers said Monday. "There comes a time—I've been a superintendent for more than 20 years—that you need to do something different."

Although district officials have said a national search would begin to find Flowers' replacement, the board did not take action Monday to proceed with a hiring process.

Instead, Board President Kara Gravely-Stack said the board's governance committee would discuss the issue at its January meeting and return to the board with a recommendation to hire a consulting firm or perform the search process internally.

Flowers and Human Resources Director Robin Hill will put together a list of pros and cons of hiring a consulting firm to help search for a new superintendent.

Hill said when Flowers was hired in 2010, the hiring process was done internally without the help of a consulting firm.

"We should be aware of the fee of a national firm that would be charged for a national selection process," said Board Member Allan Skramstad. "It won't come cheap."

Flowers said he can help the board determine a hiring process, but he will not have any input on individual candidates.

"I'm willing to consult about processes, not persons," Flowers said.
